Smokin' Contra Band
Smokin' Contra BandIn the winter of 2006, Smokin' Contra Band began performing traditional jigs and reels at local contra dances (like a square dance without the square) in Halifax. Soon, they ventured into an old-time repertoire, bringing a contemporary city-slicker edge to bluegrass and roots music. Since then the band has played in countless venues – from bars and barns to boats and barbershops – throughout Nova Scotia and all the way to Ontario. Their high-spirited sets feature soulful three-part vocal harmonies inspired by the high lonesome sound, rippin' fiddle tunes, foot-stomping sing-alongs and bilingual ballads. Crowding a single microphone, they still leave lots of elbow-room for improvisational exploration.

The band’s first album, Slim Pickins, was produced by Glenn Meisner of the CBC and nominated for a 2010 East Coast Music Award in the bluegrass category. Album #2 will be released in the later part of 2011.
