Since 2007, Vancouver based Juno Productions have toured their multi-award winning play, Jake’s Gift, to over 160 communities across Canada. This one act, one-woman
show tells the story of a Canadian WW2 veteran who reluctantly returns to Normandy, France, for the 60th Anniversary of the D-Day landings.
While roaming the shores of Juno Beach, Jake encounters Isabelle, a precocious 10 year old from the local village. Isabelle’s inquisitive nature and charm challenge the old soldier to confront some long ignored ghosts – most notably, the wartime death of his eldest brother, a once promising young musician. At its heart, Jake’s Gift is about the importance of remembrance, and makes personal the story behind one soldier’s grave.
With over 550 performances under their belt, performer Julia Mackey and director, Dirk Van Stralen, are still passionately sharing this story in small rural communities and big city centers alike.
During the showcase, Julia Mackey will perform a 20 minute segment of the play, introducing the audience to three of the four characters in the play.
Juno Productions are the recipients of the 2011 CAPACOA Touring Artist of the Year Award; the 2011 BC Touring Council’s Artist of the Year Award and the 2010 Contact East Touring Performers Award.
