The Grammy-nominated bassist, composer and educator John Brown is a North Carolina native who currently serves as Director of Jazz Studies and is an Associate Professor of Music at Duke University in Durham, NC. He has performed around the globe with artists including Wynton Marsalis, Ellis Marsalis, Nnenna Freelon, Cyrus Chestnut, Diahann Carroll, Rosemary Clooney, Nell Carter, Lou Donaldson, Slide Hampton, Nicholas Payton and more. He performed in November in Hawaii in a special concert for U.S. President Barack Obama.

Recordings by the John Brown Trio, John Brown Quintet and big band sound of the John Brown Jazz Orchestra have received Downbeat rankings and critical accolades in media in the U.S. and Europe. “One Night in Kernersville,” a film about the making of the John Brown Jazz Orchestra’s latest album was named Best Short Film at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in 2011.

Brown’s concert performances include notable venues Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Blue Note, Blues Alley and the Hollywood Bowl, with major jazz festival appearances at the Playboy Jazz Festival, the JVC Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, the Free Jazz Festival (Brazil) and Jazz e Vienne (France). He actively performs and records internationally as a sideman and bandleader, fronting his own configurations in trio, quintet and jazz orchestra. John has extensive educational residency credentials and has received numerous educational touring grants from the North Carolina Arts Council.
