Jill Barber
Jill BarberDrawing on influences such as old-time jazz standards, folk balladry and traditional country, Halifax’s Jill Barber has become one of Canada’s most distinctive voices. She first gained national critical acclaim with the 2004 release of her CBC-produced EP, Oh Heart. Receiving four-star reviews in Eye, Now, and Chart Magazine, the release also prompted The National Post to hail the singer-songwriter as “Canada’s best altcabaret singer.”

This momentum continued in 2005 with Oh Heart earning her Female Artist-Recording of the Year at the Music Nova Scotia Awards. She was nominated for two 2005 East Coast Music Awards and garnered a nomination at the inaugural Canadian Folk Music Awards.

Now, on the heels of the critically acclaimed EP, Oh Heart, is her new album, For All Time (Dependent / Baudelaire, 2006). With eleven new tracks that strike a balance between classic and contemporary songwriting styles, For All Time further demonstrates Jill’s keen melodic sense and compelling lyrical abilities. The album’s sensual timelessness instantly draws the listener in, as its subdued and rich tones showcase her warm and unique vocals.

Recorded over the course of six months in Toronto, the album was produced by Les Cooper, who also performs as a multi-instrumentalist on the album, and features the renowned Bazil Donovan (Blue Rodeo) on bass and Blake Manning (Sarah Slean) on drums. Guest appearances include a vocal performance by Jim Cuddy (Blue Rodeo) on the country-tinged “Don’t Go Easy,” guitar by singer/songwriter Luke Doucet, piano and clarinet performances by Spencer Evans (Sarah Harmer) and a special duet with Jill’s brother, Matthew Barber. The album was mixed by Andre Wahl (Hawksley Workman, Anne Murray) and mastered by Chris Potter (Sarah McLaughlin,
Rufus Wainwright).
