Rum for the Money
Rum for the MoneyTheatre Newfoundland Labrador
Playwright, Berni Stapleton. Directed by Jeff Pitcher

A beautiful, poignant and mysterious piece of theatre that will leave you enthralled. The sounds of whales, the put-put of a motor and the musings of three men and suddenly we’re tapped into a brand new stream of consciousness. Set in the 1960s in a small dory on the waters between Newfoundland and St. Pierre & Miquelon, three Newfoundland men are on a rum running mission in the middle of the night escaping and dodging French bullets and then evading RCMP cutters. An eerie night ensues as our three rum runners question their lot in life as inexplicable happenings engulf them. A Rum for the Money melds comedy and drama to perfection.

Founded in 1979 by the late Maxim Mazumdar, Theatre Newfoundland Labrador (TNL) operates a year-round professional theatre company from its home base, Corner Brook. From September to May, TNL produces professional theatre, community and youth programming in Corner Brook and regularly tours regionally, nationally and internationally with plays like Tempting Providence by Robert Chafe; New Found Lands by Nell Leyshon and Robert Chafe (it’s first ever international co-production). From May to September TNL produces a repertory festival the Gros Morne Theatre Festival in Cow Head, Gros Morne National Park. This year’s Festival features all five of David French’s “Mercer family plays” – A Soldier’s Heart, Salt Water Moon; 1949, Leaving Home and Of the Fields, Lately – marking the first time these beloved plays will be produced in rep.
