Ballet Creole
Ballet CreoleIn its 20th anniversary year, active on the Canadian dance scene since August 1990, and hailed as “one of Toronto’s top dance companies, Ballet Creole is vintage eclecticism…always embracing a cultural heritage and the modern-dance repertoire” Paula Citron (Dance Critic). Our high-energy works range from African ritualism to abstract modern, with a repertoire, driven by the rhythm of the drums.

While focusing on the traditional and contemporary performing arts of the Caribbean and Africa, Ballet Creole aims to establish a dynamic new artistic tradition in Canada based on a “creolization” or fusion of diverse dance and music traditions. We are inspired by black cultural roots, ballet and modern dance.

Under the artistic direction of dancer, choreographer and percussionist Patrick Parson, Ballet Creole provides a multicultural forum for choreographers, dancers and musicians. The company presents two, main-stage productions as part of Ballet Creole’s Annual Dance Season. Ballet Creole’s, full length production "Soulful Messiah," premiered in Nov. 2002. The work is set to a contemporary rendition of the music of George Frideric’s Handel’s Messiah. The choreography expresses this musical marriage by using popular and contemporary dance infused with African dance aesthetics. In its Spring Season, signature pieces include dance works of the Artistic Director, Patrick Parson, Associate Choreographer, Gabby Kamino and other notable guest choreographers like Milton Myers former member of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre.

Ballet Creole is a dance company, that tour nationally and internationally enriching the lives of people through captivating and quality performances. We have a special commitment to youth and an annual performance tour by Ballet Creole’s professional dancers and musicians runs from September to June, to schools throughout Canada. The School of Ballet Creole, also offers full and part-time programs for professionals, pre-professionals and the community at large.
