Tocani
Tocani is a multidisciplinary project inspired by pre-Hispanic cultures of the Americas. Anchored in acoustic instruments, Tocani began with the Mexica instruments Huehuetl and Teponaztli, but its musical palette extends far beyond, incorporating instruments like the marimba, shakers, ocarinas, electric bass, megaphone, and more. This blend of ancient and modern elements fuels their exploration of sounds, rhythms, and innovative compositions.
As a young and ambitious project, Tocani has already captivated over 2,000 spectators with a handful of meaningful performances. Their unique blend of rhythms, immersive staging, costumes, and storytelling transforms each presentation into a full sensory experience.
The ensemble consists of five core members—Camilo Giraldo, Luis Rojas, Guillermo Lopez, Alfonso Sierra, and “El Tlacuahe”, with regular collaborations, including with Isaias. Each member brings diverse professional expertise, enhancing the project musically, theatrically, visually, and culturally.
Based in Toronto, Canada, Tocani strives to bridge ancient traditions with contemporary creativity, frequently collaborating with other artists to develop new works. Their mission is to connect audiences with the vibrant heritage of the past, reimagined through innovative and engaging performances.
Tocani aims to connect audiences to the vibrant traditions of the past while reimagining them for contemporary exploration.
